5 interesting facts about osteoporosis

5 interesting facts about osteoporosis

19 December 2014, 17:19
Belly fat, moles, anorexia, small testes, dowager's hump all have one thing in common – osteoporosis!
Yes, you read right. The mental image that comes to mind when thinking about osteoporosis is an elderly woman often struggling to maintain her posture.
However, some interesting facts have emerged when we strip away the clinical and cold literature and studies into osteoporosis defined as a systemic skeletal disease associated with decreased bone mass and quality, decreased muscle power and an increased tendency to fall.
1) Men get osteoporosis too

Lowered levels of testosterone usually in tandem with small testes are associated with age-related osteoporosis in men.
Men are the "weaker sex" in terms of death and disability caused by osteoporosis as their bone health is simply being ignored by health-care systems. A study from the USA has shown that men were 50% less likely to receive treatment than women.

It is estimated that the lifetime risk of experiencing an osteoporotic fracture in men over the age of 50 years is up to 27%, higher than that of developing prostate cancer, according to Professor John A. Kanis, who is president of International Osteoporosis Foundation.

Guys, read more about your osteoporosis risk here.
2) Belly fat Belly fat puts women and men at risk for osteoporosis.
For years, it was believed that obese women were at lower risk for developing osteoporosis, and that excess body fat actually protected against bone loss.
A study found that having too much internal abdominal fat may, in fact, have a damaging effect on bone health.
Another study showed that visceral, or deep belly, obesity is a risk factor for bone loss and decreased bone strength in men.
"It is important for men to be aware that excess belly fat is not only a risk factor for heart disease and diabetes, it is also a risk factor for bone loss," said Miriam Bredella, MD, radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

3) The dreaded dowager's hump
Osteoporotic changes most commonly affect the spine and hips. If you have osteoporosis of the spine, the vertebrae can fracture and this could see you getting a hunched back, otherwise known as dowager's hump.
There is no way of avoiding a hump from forming on your back, but you can reduce the chances of developing one by consuming the recommended daily allowance of calcium and vitamin D.
4) Many moles linked to lower risk of osteoporosis

If you have many moles, you may actually age slower than your "non-moley" friends, research suggests.
The slower rate of ageing in "moley" people could indicate that they will be less susceptible to age-related diseases such as osteoporosis although more research is needed to confirm this.
5) Anorexia People who have suffered from an eating disorder, such as anorexia, are more prone to developing osteoporosis.
Your diet plays an integral role in both developing and treating osteoporosis also described at the “silent disease” because it progresses undetected for many years.
Insufficient intake or absorption of calcium and vitamin D results in bone loss.

Also Read: Men are the weaker sex when it comes to bone health

Calcium is an essential mineral required for bone formation and is critical for bone health throughout one's life. If your daily intake of calcium is inadequate, the body takes what it needs from the bones, which may result in osteoporosis.
However, Calcium alone is not enough; be sure to take your vitamin D as well. The body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, one can’t form enough of the hormone calcitriol (known as "active vitamin D").
This in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from the diet. In this situation, the body must take calcium from its stores in the skeleton, which weakens existing bone and prevents the formation of strong, new bone.

Least Expensive Cars of 2015

Step 1 of 15

1. Nissan Versa 1.6 S

Nissan Versa.
Looking for inexpensive wheels? Here are the least expensive cars on sale in America. We've driven all of them, and we'll tell you which cheap cars are the real deals -- and which ones are the real duds.
1. Nissan Versa 1.6 S: $12,815 (including destination charge)
Good value? Yes
The least-expensive new car you can buy also happens to be one of my favorite cars on this list. The Versa isn't some undersized econobox; instead it's a surprisingly roomy four-door sedan that offers nearly as much interior space as a mid-size car like the Toyota Camry -- and for a little more than half the price. The styling is a bit homely and creature comforts are few and far between, but the Versa does come with air conditioning, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and a CD stereo as standard. That said, it lacks power windows or locks, the latter virtually a must-have if you're hauling kids, and if you want an automatic transmission, the price rises rather steeply to $14.315. But the rest of the options are reasonably priced; a top-of-the-line Versa SL with power windows and locks, a fuel-efficient CVT automatic transmission, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and navigation -- navigation, for cryin' out loud! -- costs less than a basic two-door Honda Civic. Not only is the Versa America's cheapest car, it's also America's best family-car value.

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

John 17

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

“I have revealed you[a] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[e] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

After Alan Gross release, Obama seeks to resume full diplomatic ties with Cuba

In a move to wipe away one of the Cold War’s last vestiges, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced that the United States and Cuba will start talks on restoring full diplomatic relations for the first time in the half-century since the revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power.
“Today America chooses to cut loose the shackles of thepast, so as to reach for a better future for the Cuban people, for theAmerican people, for our entire hemisphere and for the world,” Obama declared at the White House.
The stunning shift came directly after Cuba released imprisoned U.S. aid contractor Alan Gross and a U.S. intelligence asset, while the United States freed three convicted Cuban spies in a tit-for-tat that U.S. officials insisted was not a “swap.”
CLICK IMAGE for slideshow: This handout photo from the Twitter account of Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz. shows Alan Gross arriving at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014. The US and Cuba have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and open economic and travel ties, marking a historic shift in U.S. policy toward the communist island after a half-century of enmity dating back to the Cold War, American officials said Wednesday. The announcement came amid a series of sudden confidence-building measures between the longtime foes, including the release of American prisoner Alan Gross, as well as a swap for a U.S. intelligence asset held in Cuba and the freeing of three Cubans jailed in the U.S. Gross' wife Judy is at center. (AP Photo/Sen. Jeff Flake)Some Republicans and Democrats vowed to oppose Obama’s new policy, which will also include making it easier for Americans to travel to the Socialist-run island 90 miles from Florida beaches and return with consumer goods – including Cuba’s fabled rum and iconic cigars.
“To those who oppose the steps I'm announcing today, let me saythat I respect your passion and share your commitment to liberty and democracy,” Obama said. “The question is how we uphold that commitment. I do not believe we can keep doing the same thing for over five decades andexpect a different result.”
The dramatic announcement capped 18 months of secret negotiations – early diplomatic flirtations in the spring of 2013, a first meeting of top officials hosted by Canada, a series of furtive exchanges there and at the Vatican, a rare letter from Pope Francis urging Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro to find common ground, a final meeting at the Holy See this fall, and ultimately a phone call between Castro and Obama on Tuesday. Fidel Castro was not a part of the negotiations, top U.S. officials told reporters.
“I want to thank His Holiness, Pope Francis, whose moral example shows us the importance of pursuing the world as it should be, rather than simply settling for the worldas it is,” Obama said.
The conversation between Obama and Raúl Castro, which U.S. officials said ran between 45 minutes and an hour, was the first such contact since the 1959 Cuban revolution that swept Fidel Castro to power and quickly aligned Havana with Moscow, leading to a punishing U.S. economic embargo. The collapse of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War did not lead Washington to end its punitive sanctions, ultimately driving a wedge between the United States and much of Latin America, as well as allies like Canada and most nations of Europe.
“I look forwardto engaging Congress in an honest and serious debate about lifting the embargo,” Obama said. But that was sure to be an uphill fight in the Republican-controlled Congress that convenes in January. Both parties include members who support the embargo or lifting it, while business and agricultural interests in the United States have increasingly lined up behind removing the economic restrictions.
Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, who will take the reins of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the new Congress, vowed to scrutinize the new policy but stopped well short of opposing it.
“The new U.S. policy announced by the administration is no doubt sweeping, and as of now there is no real understanding as to what changes the Cuban government is prepared to make,” Corker said in a statement. “We will be closely examining the implications of these major policy changes in the next Congress.”
But the outgoing Senate Foreign Relations Committee chairman, Democratic Bob Menendez of New Jersey, was expected to deliver a full-throated denunciation of the policy.
And Republican House Speaker John Boehner blasted the decision as "another in a long line of mindless concessions to a dictatorship that brutalizes its people and schemes with our enemies."
The White House cannot completely lift the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba -- that will require action by Congress. But Obama unveiled executive actions to ease restrictions on trips by U.S. citizens to Cuba. Those travelers will also be able to buy Cuban goods for personal use, including up to $100 in alcohol or tobacco products, meaning that at least some Americans will be able to bring home some of the island's famous rum and cigars.
“We cannot completely lift the travel ban" without Congress, one official said on a conference call organized by the White House. "We are authorizing as much travel as we possibly can within the constraints of the legislation.”
In practice, that will mean granting travel licenses to all travelers in categories that Congress has already designated as permitted to go to Cuba. Those include: family visits, official U.S. government travel, journalism, professional research or meetings, educational exchanges, religious activities, public performances (including sporting events), and humanitarian work.
Obama will also expand financial connections between the United States and Cuba, notably raising the amount of "remittances" -- essentially, tranfers of cash from Cuban-Americans to relatives in Cuba -- allowed from $500 every three months to $2,000.
The scope of the policy shift was a surprise, but the Obama Administration had previewed the potential change when longtime Obama foreign policy aide Antony Blinken testified in a Senate hearing in November on his confirmation to the number-two job at the State Department. Blinken was confirmed Tuesday.
It was not clear whether Obama's much-discussed December 2013 handshake wtih Raúl Castro at a memorial service for the late South African leader Nelson Mandela was part of the warming relations.
Gross had been sentenced in 2011 to 15 years in prison in connection with an effort to create a communications network outside Cuban government control. Cuba freed him on humanitarian grounds as part of a broader deal that saw each side free intelligence assets.
The United States and Cuba have had no embassies -- or ambassadors -- since 1961. Each side has an "interests section" housed in another country's embassy.

How significant is the wedding ring?

Wedding vows

Wedding ring comes in various shapes and sizes.
The exchange of rings between a man and woman is an ancient tradition, which dates back to about 4,800 years ago in ancient Egypt.
At that period, rings were made from rushes and reeds, when compared to the metallic materials from which wedding rings are made nowadays.
Wedding rings, which are circular in shape, symbolise eternity, indicating that there is no beginning or end to a marriage.
From the Roman perspectives, however, “rather than offering a ring to woman as a symbol of love, rings were given to women as a symbol of ownership.
“They symbolised strength and permanence,” according to DanforthDaimond.com, an online publication.
Historians say that it was not until about 806 A.D. that the Christians started using rings in marriage ceremonies.
The wedding ring is won on the fourth finger (also known as the ring finger) of the left hand.
A man or woman wears the ring on the fourth finger and that singular act signifies that the person is married.
To most people, wedding rings are symbols of marital union.
The original purposes of wedding rings notwithstanding, observers insist that the values of wearing the rings are often undermined, particularly in Nigeria.
Mrs. Nnenna John-Paul, an Abuja-based businesswoman, insists that “a wedding ring is just a sign to let people know that someone is married; it has nothing to do with the relationship, that is, the marriage itself.’’
She adds that a wedding ring was a signpost which communicates a message to other people that someone is “already taken”.
John-Paul, however, says that wedding rings are not quite important, as they are only ceremonial objects which couples use while exchanging marital vows.
“In practical terms, the significance of a wedding ring ends after the vows have been made.
“This is because a wedding ring is superficial, as it is not significant to building up a relationship; it doesn’t enhance the love between couples and it doesn’t boost the communication level,’’ she says.
John-Paul insists that the guide to a successful marriage ought to be the commitment which the spouses made to each other, while the ring should only serve as a reminder of that commitment.
“The decisions a man and woman made before going to the altar should be what keeps the marriage going and the meaning that should be attached to the wedding ring,’’ she says.
John-Paul argues that the fear of God could only guarantee fidelity in a marriage and not the wearing of wedding ring per se.
She, nonetheless, want couples to stay committed to their partners, saying: “Commitment in marriage should be seen through the spouses’ actions and not by mere words.’’
Sharing similar sentiments, Mr. Chuks Nwachukwu, an ICT consultant, says that ring is “just a symbol that keeps activating a person’s memory that he or she is married; it also alerts members of the society that someone is married.
“It shows the society that there is someone else who is wearing the other counterpart of the ring,’’ he adds.
He stresses that the reasons why some people attach so much meaning to wedding rings is because “as human beings, we always like to have something to look up to.’’
Nwachukwu says that the notion behind wearing of rings simply defines the philosophy that “seeing is believing’’.
He argues that a wedding ring is a reminder and a representation of a marital commitment which has no spiritual connotations.
In addition, Mrs. Obiageli Titus, a business woman, says that the wearing of a wedding ring tends to confer some kind of respect on the person wearing it in the society.
She, nonetheless, concedes that while many spouses have high regard for wedding rings, several others “don’t give a damn about the ornament.
“Wedding rings do not guard against cheating in a marriage; adultery is conceived in the mind.
“It is the fear of God that helps a man or woman to keep away from such illicit acts,’’ Titus adds.
On his part, Pastor Peter Igomu, an Abuja-based cleric, insists that a wedding ring is a sign of love.
He notes that even though the trend was a foreign tradition, it has been adopted by the church.
Igomu stresses that the exchange of rings is a sacred thing before God, as it is meant to remind married couples of their marital vows.
“The wearing of wedding rings is a good tradition which should be encouraged,’’ he adds.
However, Alhaji Biola Lawal, a journalist, argues that in Islam, the ring is not recognised as a symbol of marriage.
He said that if some Muslims are seen wearing rings, they are simply doing that because of its “bandwagon effect.
“We just live the way we do. This is because one culture or religion is bound to influence the other in a harmonious way,’’ he says.
Lawal, nonetheless, insists that the most important thing about marriage in Islam is the payment of dowry.
He also says that the physical appearance of a married Muslim woman is what differentiates her from a single lady.
“The manner in which a married woman dresses is different from the dressing patterns of others,’’ he says, adding: “her dressing is modified because she is carrying somebody’s label; as her husband’s honour and dignity go with her.’’
The divergent sentiments on the significance of wedding rings notwithstanding, one point is, however, clear: Married couples should strive to uphold their nuptial commitments and do away with the superficiality of wearing rings that have no connotation whatsoever.

2015 budget: Okonjo-Iweala begs Tambuwal, House leaders

Ahead of today’s laying of the 2015 budget on the table for National Assembly’s consideration, Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday pleaded with House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal to facilitate the bill’s passage.
There has been no love lost between the executive and the Speaker since he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tambuwal’s security guards have been withdrawn and he and some of the members were prevented from accessing the National Assembly complex on November 20.
They were also tear gassed.
In response to the police invasion and the declaration by Inspector General of Police Suleiman Abba that he does not recognise Tambuwal as Speaker, the House has restricted policemen to the gate of the complex.
A principal officer, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, said: “The Minister of Finance met with Tambuwal to solicit the support of the House for easy passage of the 2015 budget.
“For about two hours, she begged the Speaker and other House leaders, including the chairmen of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, on the presentation of next year’s Appropriation Bill.
“There is need to fast-track the budget in the overall interest of the country. The Minister decided to by-pass the legal cold war between the Presidency and the House to make a strong case for the nation’s economy.”
Another principal officer said: “Okonjo-Iweala briefed the session on some realistic projections surrounding the 2015 budget, including the $65 per barrel benchmark.
“She spoke on the likely challenges the nation might face with the implementation of the 2015 budget and the plans put in place by her ministry to manage these shocks.
“She marshaled her points in an emotional manner.
“She came to plead with the House to put the survival of the economy above petty politics overshadowing the activities of the House.
“The nation’s economy will be in dire straits if the row over the plot to force the Speaker and others to vacate their seats festers.
“I think, it is this kind of rapprochement that the nation needs. Tambuwal assured the Minister of the readiness of the House to facilitate the quick passage of the budget whenever it is presented or laid.”
Notwithstanding the visit of the Minister, Tambuwal staved off the plot to force him to vacate his seat following House decision to stop the police from manning all the gates to the National Assembly Complex.
Policemen have now  been restricted to the entrance checkpoint, which is about two to three kilometres to the main gate of the National Assembly Complex.
Instead, sergeants-at-arms were directed to take over security in the National Assembly.
Besides the security build-up, it was gathered that the rejection of an ex-parte application to sack Tambuwal by Justice Ahmed Mohammed put the anti-Speaker’s camp in disarray and the plot failed.
Those behind the plot have also discovered that they could not muster the required number to force Tambuwal  to vacate his seat because of issues over primaries, which had forced some members to defect from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) to other parties.
A source said: “We did not want a repeat of the invasion of the Assembly complex by the police. So, we haveprepared ahead to forestall any attempt to use the police to force Tambuwal to vacate his seat. We took pre-emptive measures.

FC Barcelona overpaid for Luis Suarez, while Chelsea Football Club bought Diego Costa for almost half his real value

Did Barcelona overpay for Luis Suarez?

Did Barcelona overpay for Luis Suarez

The Football Observatory, based within the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) in Neuchatel, Switzerland, specialises in the statistical analysis of football.

The group uses an exclusive algorithm – taking into account values such as length of contract, age, position, goals, shots and minutes – to calculate the current value of nearly 1500 players from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga or Ligue 1 who have transferred in the last five years.

The CIES Football Observatory analysed the players who featured in the 2014 Goal Transfer List and revealed that Chelsea were the big winners – signing Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas for well under their current value.

The Blues paid Atletico Madrid a €44 million transfer fee for Costa, but his real value today is €84m.

Meanwhile, Barcelona were the big losers, paying Liverpool €81m for Luis Suarez, who is only worth €48m, also recouping less than they should have done for Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez.

Chelsea dispensed with €37m for Fabregas, yet his current value is actually €62m. So far this season, Costa and Fabregas have been outstanding. The former has scored 12 goals in 13 Premier League games, while the latter already has 11 assists – more than any other player.

David Mark’s security

It was David Mark’s security details that tear-gassed Tambuwal, Rep members – DPO
There was a mild drama at the Senate probe of the November 20 National Assembly invasion by the police when the Divisional Police Officer attached to the federal parliament, Mr. James Ndachaba, said the police officers from the FCT command, were not responsible for the tear gas canister thrown at the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal.
Ndachaba, who stated this while testifying before the Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s ad-hoc committee of the Senate probing the unfortunate development, however, indicted security details attached to Senate President, David Mark, for being responsible for the tear gas canister thrown at the Speaker and his colleagues on November 20.
Curiously, heads of other security and paramilitary agencies attached to the National Assembly, however, disagreed with the position of Ndachaba as they stated that they were not aware of any Mark’s security detail throwing tear gas at Tambuwal.
But the DPO argued that he actually saw Mark’s security detail, whose name he did not mention, through a video recording, perpetrating the act.
The following conversation ensued between the committee chairman and Ndachaba.
Makarfi: You wrote in your written submission that one of the security details of Senate President, David Mark, fired the tear gas. Are you saying that it is not the policemen under your command that fired the tear gas?
Ndachaba: With due respect sir, what I viewed on the screen showed that the police under my command dressed differently from those attached to the Senate President……
Makarfi (cuts in): I want you to be specific are you telling this committee that it is the security personnel of the Senate President that fired the tear gas?
Ndachaba: What I am saying is that the tear-gassing took place when the Senate President attempted to enter the chamber of the House of Representatives and there was a commotion which led to the injury of his aide-de-camp (ADC).
Makarfi (cuts in again): Are you saying that the tear gas was only fired at the entrance of the House of Representatives chambers? Are you saying tear gas was not fired anywhere within the premises of the National Assembly before then?
Ndachaba: I asserted in my report with you sir where I wrote that the tear gas might have exploded when attempt was made to disarm a police officer at the entrance of the main gate.
Makarfi: You are under oath. Here you have put in writing that the tear gas might have been exploded by one of the security details of the Senate President.
Ndachaba: Very well sir, I was not physically there but I saw it on the video clips which was aired by a television station. My submission was based on information and the video clips that I saw. I saw it on the screen.
Makarfi: This is a grievous allegation which you have submitted in writing. I want you to submit a copy of the video clip otherwise we will describe your allegation as hearsay.
It will be recalled that Tambuwal and some federal lawmakers were locked out of the complex on that day after a futile attempt to stop Tambuwal, by firing tear gas canisters at him and his colleagues.
The police had said that it acted on security reports that the National Assembly would be invaded by thugs on the day when lawmakers were to either ratify or reject President Goodluck Jonathan’s extension of emergency rule in the North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.
The Senate leadership, after an extensive debate on the issue on the floor, set up a committee led by Makarfi, the chairman of its Finance Committee, to probe the circumstances that led to the invasion and report back in two weeks.
However, more than a week behind schedule, Makarfi commenced investigation into the police invasion on Monday.
